Georgia-Rae Maxwell of Elton Collegiate and Riley Rutherford of Glenboro School are the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association's 2016-2017 “A” High School Athletes of the Year.

Maxwell participated in volleyball, basketball, badminton and track & field. She led the Sabres to numerous tournament wins and was named MVP and MHSAA Athlete of the Week. Maxwell helped Elton to a third place finish at the Provincial Basketball Championship and received the Dr. Dale Iwanoczko Memorial Scholarship and was named a Credit Unions of Manitoba Scholar Athlete.

“With all the years of volleyball, basketball and badminton, and all the sports, you see a lot of good players,” said Maxwell. “To be selected as the Athlete of the Year is an honour.”

Rutherford participated in volleyball, basketball, baseball, hockey and track & field. He was the captain of the Pantherse volleyball and basketball teams and was a graduating all-star for both sports. Rutherford was a member of Glenboro's Zone 6 championship golf team and represented the Glenboro/Carberry/Baldur Wildcats at the Westman High School Hockey League All-Star Game.

“My teammates, coaches and parents helped make me a better person and a better athlete and helped me get towards this day and be awarded this award,” said Rutherford.

The “AA” Athletes of the Year were Rylan Metcalf of Carman Collegiate and Jessica Edel of Morris School.

The “AAA” Athletes of the Year were Jonathan Miranda of St. Maurice School in Winnipeg and Renee Desroches of Dauphin Regional Secondary School.

Cole Penner of Garden City Collegiate and Victoria Tachinski of Vincent Massey Collegiate were selected the “AAAA” Athletes of the Year.

Tachinski and Metcalf were named the overall Athletes of the Year.
