The Brandon Marlins are the Western Canadian Champions. They won the Western Canadian Junior AAA Baseball crown in Weyburn Sunday evening, with a 4-0 win over the South Jasper Place Jays. Starting pitcher Daylan Creasy went the distance on the mound to earn the win.

The Marlins and Jays met in the opening game of the tournament Friday morning. That game was an 5-0 victory for South Jasper Place. The Marlins were looking to avenge the loss when they met again Sunday evening. The Marlins had a bye to the gold medal game, after coming out of a three-way tie for first with the lowest defensive runs per inning against the other two teams that finished the tournament with a 3-1 record. The Jay had to get through the Pembina Valley Orioles for a second time in the tournament to make it to the final. The Jays would win the tiebreaker by a final of 7-5.

All four runs for the Marlins came early in the game, off the batting of Skylar Canada and Clark Whelpton. The Jays threatened to score a number of times, but could only muster four hits in total off of Creasy. The Marlins, on the other hand, also took advantage of errors by the Jays to get runners on base, but aside from the runs scored in the first inning, weren’t able to get much more going.

This is the first title in Marlins history, as it is the team’s second year in existence. Head coach Brad Schoonbaert says the future looks bright for his team ,as they only have two graduating players from the roster this year.
