Diarmuid Kelly and Carter Rigby share a common bond.

Kelly scored the winner in double overtime when the Bentley Generals beat the South East Prairie Thunder 4-3 in the 2009 Allan Cup final in Steinbach.

Seven years later the Generals did it again – same opposition, same score and same packed arena.

As a matter of fact the winning goal was scored at the same end of the ice.

Rigby notched his second goal of the game in overtime as Bentley edged South East 4-3 in the 2016 final Saturday at the T.G. Smith Centre.

Rigby deflected the puck past Prairie Thunder goaltender Steve Christie 15:47 into extra time.

“I just saw Hazer (Generals defenseman Colten Hayes) get the puck at the point. He's been giving it to me a lot but I haven't been touching any of his tips. Finally he got a shot through, it hit my stick and that was the end of her.”

Ian Shultz and Jesse Todd also scored for Bentley.

Shultz's power play goal 9:38 into the third period tied the game at 3-3.

“Give all the credit to Bentley,” said Prairie Thunder head coach Brad Purdie. “They played hard. We took the lead three times. It would have been nice to take a two-goal lead but they came right back every time we scored. Couple of bad breaks on their power play goals but that's hockey.”

Christie stopped 33 shots while Generals netminder Thomas Heemskerk faced 47 shots.

Tyler Dittmer had a pair of goals and Blair Macaulay had three helpers for the Thunder who blanked the Generals 2-0 in the 2015 Allan Cup final in Clarenville.

“It's a heartbreaker,” said Del Cowan who chipped in with a goal and two assists. “It really is. You look at two of their goals - they try to centre it - off skates and pinball home. I'm pretty happy with our effort. I didn't think we made too many mental mistakes. We didn't give it away. It was just the bounces.”

Don Morrison, Curtis Austring, Brett Thurston and Sean Robertson are the four Bentley players who can say they won the Allan Cup twice in Steinbach.

“I think it was a great hockey game,” said Robertson when asked to comment on Saturday's final. “It was physical, there was fast pace and there was some skill involved. For us to persevere, being down – coming back, penalty kill was solid, our goaltender was solid. Very happy.”
