The Assiniboine Community College Cougars volleyball and futsal teams were in action this past weekend. The men’s and women’s futsal teams travelled to Lethbridge, AB for preseason exhibition matches, while the men’s and women’s volleyball teams travelled to Otterburne, MB to take on the Providence University College Pilots.

Friday night saw the women’s match go to 4 sets against the Pilots, with the Cougars losing 1-3. Set scores were 16-25, 18-25, 25-20, and 22-25. Kalin Winter served up 6 aces and had 33 assists, while Skyla Vanmackelbergh had 15 kills in the match, and Brittany Bachmier had 10 digs.

The men took the first set of the match off of the first ranked Pilots, but ultimately lost 1-3, (25-23, 20-25, 15-25, 11-25). Braden Campbell had 10 kills and served up 2 aces, while captain Jordan Todd had 6 kills, 5 blocks, and 4 digs.

Saturday afternoon the Cougars women’s team pulled out a win over the previously undefeated Pilots. The game went to 5 sets with the Cougars winning 3-2 (25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 18-25, and 15-9). Brittany Krahn served 4 aces, while Erica Scott had 17 kills, and Skyla Mackelbergh had 15 kills and 15 digs. The men struggled to find the same momentum and lost in three sets (10-25, 18-25, and 19-25).

Out in Lethbridge, AB both futsal teams played Lethbridge College Kodiaks Friday night. The women lost their first game of the season 0-3 and the men tied their opening game 7-7. The women then played against Lethbridge College Kodiaks second team, and lost 5-0.

In Saturday’s preseason action both teams played Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The women had a challenging game and fell 9-0 to the Rattlers. The men had an excellent match, with lots of back and forth. The final score was 5-3 for the Rattlers, with the Rattlers scoring two goals in the last two minutes to pull off the win. The men then played Lethbridge College’s second team. The score was 5-2 at half, but the Cougars struggled to keep pace in the second half due to injuries, which resulted in a 11-3 loss.

Sunday morning both teams had their last preseason exhibition matches against Lethbridge University. The women had their best match of the weekend with Katie Green getting the women’s first goal of the season. The final score was 2-1 for Lethbridge University. The men had another challenging game and fell 2-13 to Lethbridge University.

Next weekend the women’s hockey team will be back in action here at home. They play December 1 against the Minot State University Beavers at the Sportsplex with the puck dropping at 7:30 p.m. They will play Minot State University again at the Sportsplex, December 2 at 10:15 a.m.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams are also at home next weekend, hosting the Université de Saint-Boniface Rouges December 1 and 2 in the Assiniboine Community College gymnasium. December 1 the women play at 6 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m. December 2 the women will play at 12 noon and the men at 1:30 p.m.
