It had all the makings of a dream ending.

Struggling kicker boots winning field goal through the uprights on the final play of the game to lift the home side to a huge victory over a division rival.

That struggling kicker did redeem himself by kicking a 45-yard field goal to put Winnipeg ahead 23-21 but unfortunately there was still 63 seconds left on the clock.

It was Edmonton's Sean Whyte who drilled a 53-yarder on the final play of the game to lift the Eskimos past the Bombers 24-23 Saturday at Investors Group Field.

While the Edmonton kicker and his teammates were celebrating their huge road victory, Lirim Hajrullahu and the rest of the Blue Bombers were left to ponder another difficult loss which left the football team with a 4-10 record.

Hajrullahu had Bombers fans feeling uneasy all game long.

He was wide on field goal attempts from 43, 48 & 43 yards.

He missed a 32-yard convert when he hit the right upright then watched as his 40-yard field goal attempt clang off the left upright with 4:45 remaining in the game.

The math wasn't pretty – Hajruallahu tried seven kicks (five field goals and two converts) and put only five out of a possible 17 points on the board.

“It's football – it happens,” said Winnipeg receiver Clarence Denmark who caught three passes for 95 yards. “Just got to be a pro and move on to the next week. Two weeks in a row – it definitely stings a bit but we have to come back to work and continue to work and focus on B.C. next week.”

Blue Bombers quarterback Matt Nichols completed 22-of-39 passes for 320 yards and one touchdown which was a five-yarder to Nick Moore.

Cameron Marshall had a two-yard touchdown run and Troy Stoudermire returned a Whtye punt 78 yards to the Eskimos end zone.

After the game Winnipeg head coach Mike O'Shea addressed Hajrullahu's performance.

“Lirim had a bad day. Obviously we've got to look at how we're going to win games going forward but at first glance he had a bad day. He was kicking it over 80% before that. It's a tough one for him too. Not just his teammates it's a tough one for him, the fans, everything. We've got to find a way to pull him back up and get him through this next day and get him back out on the field and kicking good field goals again.”

Winnipeg's next game is Saturday, October 10th in Vancouver against the B.C. Lions.

The Lions (5-9) defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders 46-20 and moved two points ahead of the Bombers in the race for third place in the West Division.

B.C. also has a game in hand on Winnipeg.
