There's been a lot of talk recently about the possibility of a soybean crushing facility being built in Manitoba.

The topic was brought up again last week at a soybean production meeting in Portage la Prairie.

Soy Canada Executive Director Jim Everson commented on the issue.

"We've seen such a huge expansion in crushing of canola in western Canada, a great news story, more value added in Canada as opposed to shipping out the whole [product]. So for soybeans, exactly the same, up to two million tonnes of production here in Manitoba and growing in Saskatchewan. We really feel confident that the times going to come soon when one of the companies who is involved in building and managing large scale processing plants will be able to put a plant in western Canada that can take western beans."

He notes it would be another great marketing option for producers, with the ability to ship a lot of the product into the United States.

Everson says the local livestock market would also be ready to take the soybean meal for use in feed rations.
