This weekend's Small Farms Conference in Oak Bluff will cover everything from on-farm processing to holistic management to new varieties of Manitoba prairie fruit.
The first annual event will feature a dozen workshops on direct-farm marketing and small-scale food production in the province.
Small Farms Manitoba founder Kalynn Spain says the event is a chance for direct-marketing farmers to learn from each other.
"I guess my goal would be that every year this conference would bring out more and more farmers who are interested in learning from each other," she said. "And just understanding that they're not alone in all of it too, because there is a lot of similar struggles and success stories."
Spain notes the conference celebrates the one-year anniversary of the launch of Small Farms Manitoba's online directory, which now has around 130 members.
Speaking at the event will be Dr. Wayne Lees, who will give an update on the provincially-led working group that reviewed small-scale food regulations. Dean Harder will also talk about an emerging new farmer coalition in Canada led by the National Farmers Union.
The conference takes place Saturday, January 10 at the Oak Bluff Recreation Centre from 11 am until 5 pm.
