Producers are putting the finishing touches on spring seeding preparations.

Cereals are normally the first to go into the ground, followed by grain corn, soybeans and canola.

Manitoba Agriculture, Food, and Rural Development Cereal Specialist Pam de Rocquigny notes seeding could be right around the corner.

“If we get a change in temperatures where we start to see warmer conditions again, we can definitely see some crop go into the ground potentially in the April time frame,” she said. “It kind of depends what the weather is going to be like over the next few weeks.”

De Rocquigny says seed bed conditions need to be right before seeding can take place.

She adds producers should consider the risk-reward when determining when to put seed into the ground, as cold conditions could hinder the crop.
