Producers are being encouraged to put together a production plan for their farm.

Robert Moss is a Policy Analyst with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture.

He says a production plan is the first step in a total farm risk mitigation strategy:

"This is what you use to set yourself up for success by design, rather than success by chance" Moss said. "By understanding exactly and making good assumptions about price, about what your expenses are, how much you might end up producing during that year - you're simply able to make better management decisions."

Moss adds your production plan should be updated as you go through the year as you know what your costs and revenue are.

He notes by knowing what your margins per acre are it can help you decide if you need to make any adjustments along the way.
