Farmers are continuing to get set for seeding, and that includes planning for pastures.

Lorne Klein, a regional forage specialist with Saskatchewan's Ministry of Agriculture, says seeding rates for perennial forages are something producers should keep in mind. The rule of thumb is 10 pounds per acre, but it may not be the correct rate for what you're growing.

"What you need to do is calculate how many seeds per pound are in each of the species, and then you'll determine how many seed per square foot you're putting on," he says. "That varies quite significantly from one species to another."

Klein adds the target rate of seeds per square foot depends on the soil zone you are in.
