Earlier this week, Manitoba Egg Farmers (MEF) announced that it would be increasing the limit for non-quota laying hens from 99 to 300.

Small Farms Manitoba Founder Kalynn Spain says the move will allow egg production to become a much larger part of a farmer's income.

She adds even though the move is a step forward, Manitoba still has far to go to catch up with other provinces.

"You look at Quebec for example, and in terms of what they're doing with supply management and thinking about their small farmers and what their small farmers need, they're way ahead of the rest of the country. I think that Manitoba still has very far to go but getting that representation for small-scale farmers in our province is extremely important."

The increase in the personal non-quota limit now puts MEF in line with neighbouring egg boards in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
