As a result of wet weather and delayed harvest, Keystone Agricultural Producers is planning to ask the province for an extension on the November 10th nutrient application deadline, if conditions warrant.

Provincial legislation prohibits the application of nitrogen and phosphorus between and including November 10th of one year and April 10th of the following year.

This includes synthetic fertilizer and livestock manure.

KAP President Dan Mazier says producers could use a few more days to get the job done.

"There is a Nutrient Management Advisory Committee that KAP sits on and they monitor all the ground temperatures across the province and so we'll be advocating for an extension, quite obviously, just from Mother Nature wreaking havoc with all the water," he explained. "There's still a pile of crop that still needs to come in and we sure need this positive weather."

The restrictions are put in place to protect the environment from nutrient run-off when the ground is frozen or snow-covered.

Mazier expects that a conference call on the subject will take place sometime next week.
