Crop insurance adjusters are busy assessing damage caused by the winter-like storm over the May Long Weekend.

David Van Deynze, manager of claim services with Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC), said as of Friday they had received a couple hundred claims so far this year - most of those coming from the May Long Weekend.

He says there are a number of factors contributing to the damage.

"Some frost for sure and actually we're getting a number of claims where just the hard snow or sleet in the driving rain seemed to have affected some of the small canola plants, possibly even cut some of them off."

Van Deynze notes that the hardest hit region was the Manitou-Morden-Altona area.

He says most of the claims being made are for reseeding.

Last year MASC paid out $170 million in insurance claims, including $11.1 million for reseeding.
