The province`s soil fertility specialist says soil temperatures are looking good for producers wanting to apply fertilizer this spring.

John Heard notes that a determining factor will be moisture levels and the ability to cover the field. He adds soil temperatures are often oversold as a notion for planting or applying fertilizer.

Heard says there will be some challenges this spring due to the wet conditions last fall.

"In some cases, there is going to have to be some tillage done to level out those ruts for a seed bed and I expect that many growers will apply some of their fertilizer at that time, either through the tillage operation or incorporate broadcast fertilizer with that tillage operation."

Heard stresses the importance of following 4-R Nutrient Management, which means applying fertilizer at the right rate, right source, right time and right place.
