Dairy farmers in Canada are feeling uneasy as they wait to hear the fallout from the signing of the free trade deal between Canada and the European Union.

David Wiens is the chair for Dairy Farmers of Manitoba and Vice-President for Dairy Farmers of Canada.

"From a dairy perspective, of course, there's not very much to be gained," he said. "From our perspective we also expect that the federal government will follow through with their commitment to provide compensation as a result of having signed and it would work towards mitigation of the signing of the agreement."

Wiens says CETA will give access to allow European cheese into the Canadian market place, which is expected to impact production by over $100 million per year across the country.

He adds there would be some Canadian cheese being exported to niche markets in Europe, but that wouldn't compare to what is being imported into Canada.
