Some early field peas have started to flower.

With the wet conditions, now is the time for producers to start scouting for early disease.

Kristen Podolsky, production specialist with Manitoba Pulse and Soybean Growers, says there are four factors to consider when deciding whether or not to apply a fungicide.

Those include crop canopy and yield potential, leaf wetness and humidity, weather forecast, and symptoms.

"Fungicide use is a great tool, it doesn't necessarily pay every year, but it is more likely to be more likely to be economical when you meet all of those conditions and when it's been a wet June and July," she said. "Another thing to keep in mind is that fungicide use can also help reduce lodging and potentially improve harvestability, which can be a challenge for field peas."

Podolsky reminds producers that disease spores can travel in from neighbouring fields, which can be a threat even if you have a good rotation.
