The Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) has started a review of two red spring classes of wheat.

Program Manager for Quality Assurance Daryl Beswitherick says they have started to examine Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) and Canada Prairie Spring Red (CPSR).

"This review is something that the Canadian Grain Commission is responding to - end use customer are telling us that [in] the red spring class the gluten strength is too low and that they are not that happy with it currently compared to where it historically was," he said. "We're reviewing the class to ensure that the consistency and the overall quality of our premium classes of wheat are protected."

Beswitherick notes that the CGC has also set up an interim wheat class for Faller and Prosper wheat varieties, due to the fact that the two varieties don't fit into any particular class at this time.

More information on the wheat class review is expected to be released in early June.
