Lawrence MacAulay, a former dairy and potato farmer from Prince Edward Island, is the new federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food.

Dave Solverson, the president of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association (CCA) says they've met before, and he's anxious to meet again. Solverson thinks there were good signals from the Liberals during the campaign, which he hopes they follow through on.

"We sent out a list of our priorities and we sent a questionnaire on their response that they would have to work through the Country of Origin Labelling, and it was positive, they said they would be strongly supporting us and actively going with retaliatory tariffs," he says. "So that was in the campaign, we'll have to see what does happen."

Also named as minister yesterday was Chrystia Freeland of Ontario, a former journalist who will now be looking after international trade. Solverson says he hopes her ideology on trade will be similar to that of the CCA.

"As you know, CCA's high priority is open access, market access, and trade, so it's very important that the new ministers continue with the aggressive trade agenda they have and to support us when problems arise, like Country of Origin Labelling," Solverson says.
