The first cut of alfalfa is underway in Manitoba.

John McGregor, extension support person with the Manitoba Forage and Grassland Association, says despite a lack of rain in some areas, the crop was able to benefit from moisture that had accumulated over the winter.

He notes a good window has now opened up.

"Producers that are looking for a little lower quality hay should be watching their fields right now," commented McGregor. "We see the grasses are heading out right now and that's a pretty good indication that most hay should be taken down so that you've got some very good quality beef hay and maybe some quality of hay that can be used in the dairy operation for heifers."

McGregor says the first cut of alfalfa is producing some excellent yields.

The second cut is expected in about another month or so.
