Habitat for Humanity Brandon has a number of build projects on the go, and next week they're looking forward to breaking ground for a new duplex on Franklin Street.

Construction Manager, Kevin Hiebert, says this will be the last home build on their Franklin Street project.  Between Franklin and Percy Street there are about 20 homes that have been built through the Habitat home ownership program.

"It's been really neat to see the community come together and the new homeowners getting to know each other as we've got a bit of a snapshot of the neighborhood as we're building to see one family say, 'Hey!  I'll go pick up the kids after school!' because the kids all go to the same school."

"When one is busy the other family will pick up the kids," he adds. "It's neat to see a real community developing there!"

With two homes in full construction, two more close to completion, and two more homes starting next week, Habitat is always in need of volunteers.

Hiebert says they've seen a nice shift when it comes to volunteer groups.

"Every year we've got a few more businesses approaching us for team building opportunities. So, they'll fundraise within their organization and then, in most cases, give whoever signs up, the day off to come and build on site with us, as kind of a morale-boosting, teambuilding experience," he explains.  "They can work together in the office, and then they can come to our job site and work together in a different setting."

"It's fantastic," adds Hiebert.  "There's a number of groups like this who have been coming for several years and just about every year we have another couple of businesses approach us asking if we've got a day open for them!  It's just wonderful to be working with people who are interested in giving back and building community!"
